Family Weekend - Not enough sleep and some new experiences

After coming back from Chicago (we were a little bit late), Jan, Josh (our host) and me went to a Halloween Party. So we just dropped our luggage at home, changed into our costumes (Jan turned into a SWAT commander and I became a ghost with a ghost face). As we were a little bit late the others didn`t wear their costumes anymore. There was a rap battle and the people wearing the best costumes had to fight each other. We also had S`mores again (see Welcome Party and photo 1). It was great to go to a cool typical American Halloween party and at about 0.30 a.m. we went to bed.

The next day started very early for us because we went to bed at about 1 a.m. and got up at 8 a.m. because we wanted to go to church at 10.30 a.m. With mixed feelings and expectations we went to a Lutheran church that looked very pleasant. In contrast to our big Catholic church at home, the Kilian Dome, this church is small and offers rooms to accommodate the younger members and classrooms. At the beginning of the meeting, announcements were made and news were spread. The congregation was even informed that there were two German visitors that day J. During the service people were singing and dancing. In contrast to many German services, the atmosphere was lively and happy.

After this new experience we went to a Mexican restaurant. We were accompanied by a nice couple; they are friends of our host family. I think that the sauces were really spicy / hot, and we had some problems. After lunch we decided to drive to a mall near the restaurant to go shopping (yes – on a Sunday. All the shops are open on Sundays!). But we soon decided to drive to a bigger mall because we didn`t know any shops. In the bigger mall we found a few things we bought. Incidentally, the prices are much lower than in Germany. But my problem was that I got confused about the sizes in the US. I mixed them up with the British sizes, which are different. So we have to go back to the mall again this week to change the shoes I bought…

The day ended with a delicious supper and a selection of card games. Today we have to go to bed early because it is time for school tomorrow and our alarms go off at 5 a.m.
